Great Portable Apps for Designers and Developers (Windows)

February 20th, 2011

There’s nothing better to me than a few dependable, free apps that help me get things done. Below is a quick summary of a few tools that I use in my design and development. Unfortunately, most of these are Windows-only apps but I’ll do a follow-up for Mac users as well.

All of the below applications can be installed in a “portable” format, meaning they don’t rely on registry entries or archaic, machine-centric configuration files. You can install these babies on a portable drive, in your Dropbox account, or on a floppy disk if you feel so inclined (please don’t). I prefer Dropbox, as it gives me access to these apps everywhere.

Notepad++

In my opinion, the best text editor available for Windows, hands down. Notepad++ has a simple interface and more functionality than you can shake a cat at. It’s blazing fast, has phenomenal plugin availability, and excellent syntax highlighting for most languages under the sun (even Erlang, Cobol, and Prolog!) Notepad++ has frequent releases, and can be freely downloaded from http://notepad-plus-plus.org/.

Lightscreen

While Windows does have built-in screenshot capability, it’s a pain to paste into your design tool of choice, crop, and re-save. Lightscreen simplifies the screenshot process by providing the most common options, plus a few extras. With a simple click of a button (or a designated key combination) you can snap your screen, a selected window, or a crop area and immediately save as an image file. Want to copy to clipboard and paste in Photoshop? Sure! Want to hide your mouse cursor and compress to 50% JPG? No problem! Want to … well, I can’t think of anything funny at the moment, but you get the point. Download this free screenshot tool from http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/lightscreen_portable.

7-Zip

Not much to say here. Sometimes you need to zip up some files to send someone, and sometimes you need to unzip some files you received. 7-Zip is an excellent free archive manager that handles all of the important formats, and does so well. In fact, the only thing that 7-Zip can’t zip and unzip is your pants, but I hear they’re working on that. Download 7-Zip from http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/7-zip_portable.

FileZilla FTP

FileZilla is a lightweight, free FTP client. There are a lot of paid FTP clients out there; I have used many, and I’ve never been happy with them. What really became most important to me was the ability to migrate my configuration and account connection data between multiple computers. FileZilla, paired with Dropbox, allows me to do just that. Whether I’m at work, at home, or at an internet café in Mos Eisley, I can open up FileZilla and be logged into one of my many FTP servers with a few clicks of a button. For added security, I complement FileZilla with TrueCrypt, which allows me to pack up and encrypt the app, guaranteeing nobody will have access to my configuration. FileZilla can be downloaded for free from http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/filezilla_portable.

IcoFX

I don’t have to create icons that often, but when I do, this simple little app gets the job done. A quick export of my source art from Photoshop as a PNG file, open in IcoFX and BAM, icon file at the click of a button. IcoFX has some other great features (which admittedly I don’t use), but it’s a full-featured icon suite in a small download. Keep it handy for those times when you just need a Windows icon or a web favicon. IcoFX can be downloaded for free from http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/icofx_portable.

Dropbox

I’ve mentioned Dropbox a million times, but with good reason. I absolutely couldn’t live without it. I keep my important documents in it, I keep my work in it, and I keep my apps in it. Dropbox is by far the best tool I use, and I urge you to try it for a while. Every person I’ve suggested it to thanks me often for the recommendation. I wrote about it a few days ago: The Infamous Dropbox. If you’re already convinced, then go get started with Dropbox now.

Honorable Mentions

Firefox Portable, Blender 3D Portable, GIMP Portable, IrfanView Portable, VLC Media Player Portable, Foxit PDF Reader Portable, ClamWin Antivirus Portable, Toucan Backup Portable. All of these portable apps (plus tons more) are available for free download at http://www.portableapps.com.

BrushLovers – Some Free Photoshop Brushes (and Some Premium)

February 17th, 2011

A quick search tonight while looking for some free brushes unearthed BrushLovers – Free and Premium Photoshop Brushes. BrushLovers is a simple site, and a quick look tells you all you need to know. There are some great free brushes here, ranging from Holiday, to Fantasy, to Vintage and more, for use in your personal and commercial projects.

I definitely recommend checking out their selection, and if you like what you see, consider their premium sets as well. $3-7 for a high-resolution, clean Photoshop brush is a steal.

Free Content Management Systems (or “Umbraco vs. DotNetNuke vs. Drupal vs. Joomla vs. CMS Made Simple vs. CushyCMS vs. WordPress”)

February 11th, 2011

Umbraco (ASP.NET + SQL Server)

Free (Open Source) with Paid Support Options

http://www.umbraco.org

Requirements: Umbraco System Requirements

Umbraco is a recent new friend of mine. In my day job (not the one to which I wear a costume) we researched some CMS systems and decided on Umbraco. So far, it seems easy to set up (hooray), easy to use (woo hoo), and fully supportive of .NET’s ever-beautiful Master Page framework (yippy!) The canvas editing feature, which I haven’t been able to get working yet, is supposed to provide a well-integrated, live edit feature on your pages.

Umbraco seems to sit nicely alongside an existing website. However, if you want to keep your hair I recommend using it on its own subdomain. Umbraco uses URL rewriting, which is great for SEO, but makes it difficult to run on the same subdomain as an existing site. As an example, if your current site is on http://www.example.com and you want to incorporate Umbraco CMS on only some support pages, it would be easier to host those pages on something like http://support.example.com.

DotNetNuke (ASP.NET + SQL Server)

Free Community Edition, Paid Professional and Enterprise Editions

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/

DotNetNuke is a bear. And not the furry, annoying type of bear that digs through your trash and then poops on your lawn. No, DotNetNuke is the kind of bear that eats other bears for breakfast while driving a tank through a village of cannibals. It’s that serious.

DotNetNuke is a huge CMS, and is largely known for that. While its heft is surely a turnoff, what it lacks in simplicity it more than makes up for in richness. DotNetNuke is widely known to be among the most extensible and powerful CMS systems available for the .NET framework. Its marketplace for add-ons is remarkable. While it takes some getting used to, it’s a solid system that is fully capable of handling your grandmother’s cat-family tree website, or an enterprise web application with hundreds of thousands of users (or cats).

Drupal (PHP + MySQL/PostgreSQL)

Free

http://drupal.org/

Requirements: Drupal System Requirements

Ahh, Drupal, the two-headed, sword swallowing pasta chef of the CMS world. Sure, that doesn’t make sense. Neither does Drupal. So why is it listed here?

Because Drupal is a king among CMS systems, despite how confusing it seems to be initially. Granted, I’ve not given Drupal much of my time, but it’s been recommended to me by more people than I can count, and I haven’t given up on it yet. I don’t dislike it, but I couldn’t bring myself to love it either. If you’re working in a PHP environment, I recommend looking into it. Once you learn it, I understand it can be a very powerful CMS with great flexibility. Drupal experience is also a great line item for your resume.

Joomla (PHP + MySQL)

Free

http://www.joomla.org

Requirements: Joomla System Requirements

CMS Made Simple (PHP + MySQL/PostgreSQL)

Free

http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/

Requirements: CMS Made Simple System Requirements

I’ve used this CMS once. It was simple to use-intuitive, easy to set up, easy to navigate, and easy to work with. That’s really all I can say about it, other than the fact that it’s free. People who work with Joomla are lifers. They stick with it because it works, and because it’s good. If you’re running PHP, it’s a given that you will come across it at some point. Compare it to something like Drupal, and based on your needs it may be a clear winner.

CushyCMS

http://www.cushycms.com
Third-Party Tool, Free and Paid Subscriptions

CushyCMS falls into its own category, but it’s worth mentioning here among the heavyweights. CushyCMS requires no installation; it’s a third-party service that utilizes FTP access to make changes directly to your HTML. The way it works is simple: Decide which areas of your HTML will be editable, give your HTML tags the appropriate CSS class name, and CushyCMS provides a rich-text editor for that specific area. It’s a very lightweight CMS with limited functionality, but in the right situation, it’s a great little tool.

WordPress.org (PHP + MySQL)

Free, Open Source
http://www.wordpress.org

WordPress is the patriarch of blogging platforms, but a quick look through SmashingMagazine.com or any major site using it will prove why it’s a viable CMS as well. There are so many great themes and plugins for WordPress that it’s worth a look if you want a site that will grow over time. SEO-friendly URLs, great plugins, fully skinnable sites, and a fantastic 5-minute setup. You can’t go wrong. Tweeda.com is proudly hosted on WordPress.  :)

The Infamous Dropbox

February 3rd, 2011
Dropbox - Free File Syncing

Dropbox - Free File Syncing

I have to admit, when I was first referred to Dropbox, I was hesitant. Installing an application to sync a folder across computers? Why bother. I have a 16GB flash drive and a 500GB portable hard drive, so certainly I can have access to all of my files if I so desire. I didn’t think I would use it, and of course I didn’t think I’d need it … until I started using it.

The beauty of Dropbox is in the one-word definition that I don it: Simplicity.

Dropbox quietly works in the background, and it does so wonderfully. The application runs like a fierce wheel of hamsters, constantly keeping your files in sync against a redundant storage data center in the cloud. In case you’re curious, Dropbox uses Amazon’s S3 storage service-a titan in its own right-so you can be sure your files are secure and persistently backed up.

Here is a list of the features that I love:

  • Persistent data storage and syncing, so your files are always backed up and always accessible.
  • Excellent web-based interface. As long as you have an internet connection, you have access to your files. Accidentally deleted or changed a file? Roll back to a previous version with a single click.
  • Great referral program to gain more space. If you’re a student, or if you have a twitter or facebook account, you can gain a lot more space as well (up to 16GB for free accounts!)
  • Easy public file sharing, and a powerful private sharing option.
  • Throw some portable apps in your Dropbox folder and have access to them at all times. My favorites are: Notepad++, PuTTY, KeePass (and my password database), TrueCrypt, 7-Zip, InfraRecorder, LightScreen, uTorrent, VLC Player, and FileZilla.

At first I just used it for simple files, but now I use it for most of my work. Everything is always where I need it. I urge you to try it for a couple of weeks; you’ll be glad you did.

Quick Update

March 4th, 2009

Hello everyone. Just a quick update.

I had some content I was going to write about tonight, but I forgot the source files and links on another computer and being this late, I just don’t have the energy to re-collect it all. Not to worry though, everything is safe and sound and I’ll be bringing you the fresh new content tomorrow.

In the meantime, don’t forget about my Tweeda.com exclusive free Photoshop brush sets.

Watch for a new update tomorrow!

Four great free fonts

February 23rd, 2009

A well-implemented font can make a good design piece great. I’ve spent much time browsing font resources looking at hundreds, even thousands of them. In fact, I own a book that has nothing in it but typefaces, The Big Book of 5,000 Fonts: (And Where to Get Them), and it proves a great piece of inspiration. For every project there is a particular style of type that just “fits”, and so today’s post on Tweeda.com is dedicated to those silly little letters that communicate so much-in information and aesthetics.

Delicious

Delicious Free Font

Delicious Free Font

First on the list is one you may have seen before. It’s been featured in design articles, but it’s a favorite of mine: the beautiful, clean Delicious by Jos Buivenga. This full, free font set comes in three different weights (regular, bold, heavy), as well as real italic and bold-italic styles. A characteristic of this font that is interesting is all font weights have kerning and character width such that line length is standard, and an example is found on the download page. Added to this, a large x-height makes it great for a clean read with smaller copy.

Baramond

Baramond is a free version of the classic Garamond font, and was created by Jon Wheal. I’ll have to apologize ahead of time for destroying your eyeballs, but you can download the set from this visually interesting website (wear your Ray-Bans). Baramond is a full, elegant, serifed font which comes in both regular and bold weight, and includes real italic and bold-italic variations. Also available on the site is an alternate version called Paramond, a stylish font with crafty ligatures, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Aldo

Aldo Free Font

Aldo Free Font

For a sans-serif font that is anything but standard, Aldo by Trypo is a fantastic step away from traditional typefaces which still maintains a clean, distinguished look. The curvature of the letters is distinct and unique, and overall it makes for a visually interesting design. Aldo is a very full font set, however only comes in standard weight.

Dustismo

Dustismo Free Font

Dustismo Free Font

The last font on this list is Dustismo Roman by Cheapskate Fonts. This hard-edged serif font comes in both regular and bold weights and includes real italic and bold-italic styles. The subtle curvature of some of its characters makes for a nice escape from Dustismo’s otherwise blocky look. This font set is a very full one, and makes for a surprisingly easy read. I found the default letter spacing for this typeface a bit loose, but I generally prefer tighter tracking.

Enjoy!

Great freebies from BenBlogged.com!

February 19th, 2009

I had the great pleasure of getting in touch with Ben Johnson of BenBlogged.com the other day in regards to his work. Ben is a designer and illustrator who generously provides some fantastic freebies like brushes, vectors, and accents which can be found over at his blog. He has also written some helpful tutorials that no designer should overlook, and his non-freebie posts are definitely worth a read.

Tweeda Brushy v1 FIXED

February 17th, 2009

I was able to take some time this evening to get the masking issues fixed on the Tweeda Brushy v1 free Photoshop brush set. When I was masking out my image to create the brushes, my whites weren’t completely white, and therefore when they were made into a brush, it was essentially a square with a brush in the middle.

Absurd combination of little sleep, and excitement to get them out into the world. I’ll be sure to test more thoroughly next time! The good news is that the Tweeda Sketchy v1 set was completely fine, and they’re still available if you click right here.

Thanks for your patience. And, if you can, leave a comment to let me know what you think of the brushes. I’d like to do another set or two before long and I’d love suggestions and feedback.
